INFINITIVE: TO HUMAN

In a dictionary I fished out of Heraclitus’ river

there is one single entry without an exit

which goes on

spreading across the hundreds of pages –

 

To human: verb.

Humanity: an action -

the process of trying

not to be

a process –

 

to human means to bury

a noun and create another

and kill again and mourn,

 

to shed an overstretched adjective and be once

more reborn,

 

to human means to sigh

a lifelong sigh full of longing

more lovely than any song,

 

to human means to try

to answer a question and to question

the answer and to catch the end and find

in your hand a twinkling start -
